Timor Leste: Towards Democracy
Timor Leste aka East Timor is a tropical island 8 degrees south of the Equator. The country consists of half of the main island, Atauro Island north of Dili, Jaco Island at the eastern tip of the main island and the enclave of Oe-Cussi set within West Timor (Indonesia) Geographically Timor Leste is situated approximately 300 nautical miles North of Australia.
Timor Leste was colonised by the Portuguese for over four centuries and occupied by Indonesia for twenty four years. Prior to the Portuguese arriving here, Chinese merchants and people from nearby islands were already visiting and trading with Timorese people. Timor Leste was once known as the Island of Sandalwood.
The Indonesian occupation ended in 1999, when an overwhelmingly majority of the population voted for independence in a Referendum done under the auspices of the United Nations.
Over the next four weeks, more than 90% of the entire country’s infrastructure was burned and destroyed...
Fourteen years on, a still young nation of Timor Leste continues to rebuild from the ashes, facing many challenges, though now enjoying the much deserved peace and prosperity.
